Oriental Medicine

What is Oriental Medicine?
The ultimate goal of Oriental Medicine is to achieve total balance within the body, mind, and spirit, through regulating the energetic networks (or organ networks) which run throughout each of our bodies.
The principles behind Oriental Medicine have been tried and tested for over 5,000 years, and are proven to be the most effective way of avoiding disease and attaining a complete internal balance. It is truly the original form of holistic healthcare. Achieving optimal balance and health is accomplished through the use of ancient techniques such as acupuncture/acupressure, cupping, gua sha, tuina, nutritional recommendations, and custom herbal formulations.
In combination with these time tested techniques, Dr. Jones specializes in a system of microcurrent and color light therapy called Microlight therapy. This is cutting edge technology in both Eastern and Western medicine, and the combination of the two modalities makes Dr. Jones and Balance & Wellness, LLC unique and very valuable in your healthcare, as well as that of your family.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a very effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system over the last 2,500 years. Practitioners of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy all over the world. During and Acupuncture treatment, Dr. Heather Jones will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. This activates the body’s Qi (pronounced chee) and promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, and physical and emotional health. It can also improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.
Often, Dr. Jones will incorporate a non-needle form of acupuncture in her treatments using the wands of a microcurrent machine that also emit different shades of colored light (Microlight Therapy). This method is beneficial to all patients, but especially so in cases of very sensitive areas on the body and/or young children, as the wands are totally painless, and are simply placed on top of the skin. Using traditional acupuncture in conjunction with the non-needle acupuncture creates an amazing synergistic treatment protocol that speeds up the healing process considerably.
Herbs: Chinese herbal medicine is a safe, effective and drug-free way to become well and stay healthy, naturally.
Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are complementary therapeutic modalities that are often used together in the treatment of most medical conditions by Dr. Heather Jones. She believes that herbs are just as important in the care of her patients as the acupuncture is.
Over the past 5,000 years, Chinese herbology has evolved into an art form of its own. Ancient herbal information was gathered, compiled, formulated, tested, and handed down from generation to generation. Today, Doctors of Oriental Medicine continue to prescribe these ancient herbal formulas because they are a profoundly powerful therapeutic method. As a modern Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Jones is familiar with most of the 1,800 herbs in the Chinese pharmacopeia, as well as many of the herbs that have been used in Western cultures for centuries. All of these herbs are classified according to their energetic qualities, functions, and the different organs, meridians, and disharmonies they address. Individual herbs are combined in order to enhance their actions and effects on the body. When combined, a unique, synergistic formula is created to meet the specific individual needs of each patient. This combination increases the benefits of a particular formula, and minimizes any harmful side effects.
The art and skill of creating the most effective formula lies within choosing the precise and most effective herbs that target the individual patient’s disharmony. It is very important to work with a qualified herbalist who can prescribe the correct formula, monitor progress, and adjust the dosage and herbs as needed. Dr. Jones also pays close attention to any possible interactions between her herbal formulations and her patient’s current pharmaceutical regime. Each patient is asked to bring a current list of any and all medications, herbs, and supplements they are currently taking to ensure there is no interaction. Dr. Jones ensures the safety and quality of any and all herbs she prescribes for her patients as she exclusively uses herbal products that follow the very stringent Pharmaceutical GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) Standards required for the top Chinese herbal growers around the world. Dr. Jones requests a detailed certificate of analysis for heavy metals, toxic farming chemicals, microbial analysis and total bacterial count, contamination, and herb authentication and active constituent levels for all of the herbal products/companies she uses.
Formulas can be prescribed in a number of ways, and include: raw herbs that are boiled into a tea, liquid extracts, pills, and powders. The form you will receive your herbal prescription in depends on a number of factors including: lifestyle, preference, and what method will be received by your body most efficiently.
Chinese herbal medicine can be used to speed up the healing process, and strengthen and support the body. These formulas have the capacity to address the underlying ROOT cause of many medical conditions, whether acute or chronic. When prescribed and used correctly, Chinese herbal formulas rarely cause unwarranted side-effects.
Oriental Nutrition: Just as herbs are a safe, effective and natural therapeutic method, so is food. Dr. Heather Jones believes that food is the easiest and most effective means of helping her patients get healthy and stay well for life. In Oriental nutrition, all foods are categorized by their energetic qualities, functions, and the different organs, meridians, and disharmonies they address, exactly the way all herbs are classified. Nutrition is discussed with most of her patients, and Dr. Jones often provides a list of foods that are most beneficial to each patient’s individual needs. Food is medicine!
Cupping: Cupping is an ancient therapeutic modality designed to stimulate the flow of Qi and Blood within the superficial muscle layers. It is used for sore muscles, tension, neck pain, back pain, and even the common cold. In this modality, Dr. Heather Jones will place small sterile glass cups over specific areas on your body. A vacuum is created under the cup using heat or suction. The cups may be moved over the affected area or left in place for several minutes. You may leave the office looking like a big octopus gave you a good hug, but there is no need to worry. The slight redness will disappear quickly.
Tui Na: TuiNa translates as “push grasp” and is a Chinese medical massage technique that moves Qi in various parts of the body. It is used to relieve muscle pain, tension, and inflammation, and is used to heal injuries. It is also very effective in the treatment of small children.
Gua Sha: Gua Sha is another modality used to release muscle tension, tightness, and constriction. A specialized tool, such as animal horn, jade, or ceramic, is used to gently rub or scrape the skin over a trouble area. Gua Sha feels a bit like deep massage, and is very effective. This too may leave some slight redness that will quickly dissipate.
Facial Rejuvenation (ELR): Energy Light Rejuvenation (ELR) ™ is the future of skincare. It uses the cutting edge technology of microcurrent and therapeutic light and color (TLC) combined with the ancient principles of Oriental Medicine to enhance your health and appearance.
